DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening talk in our 2005 Jewish Culture Lecture Series! Naomi Horowitz will give a multimedia presentation about the traditional Jewish ritual bath: the mikvah. The presentation will include general background and a view of mikvah as the sanctification of time and space. What made mikvah a powerful experience thousands of years ago, and how can we reclaim the resonance of that experience in our lives today (and where we live now)? What we can learn from other ritual baths such as Japanese hot springs and California mud baths? Please join us for a discussion of these and other topics. Ms. Horowitz recently earned her Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For more information, please contact David Pincus (coffee {at} tremontstreetshul.org). \n\nEvent flyer (PDF file):\nhttp://www.tremontstreetshul.org/events/mikveh%20lecture.pdf

DESCRIPTION:On the Hebrew calendar, Tu B'Shvat ("the 15th of the month of Shvat") is the New Year of the Trees. The Kabbalists took this minor agricultural holiday and gave it new significance by inventing for it a ritual celebration, modeled on the Passover Seder and invoking such powerful imagery as the seasons of the year. \n
Our Tu B'Shvat seder has become one of the year's favorite events at the Tremont Street Shul. Come eat fruit, drink wine, and experience the renewing of life in the year! All those who can help set up are encouraged to come at 6:30 pm.\n
\nThe Seder is a 20s&30s-sponsored event, but all are welcome to attend. \nCost is $10 per person ($8 with advance RSVP), payable in cash at the door. Dues-paid TBS members receive an additional $1 discount!\n\nRSVP to Erica (617/497-6877; erica@alumni.brandeis.edu)\n no later than Friday, January 21, 2005.\n

DESCRIPTION:Come Help Prepare and Serve Meals\n\nFaith Lutheran Church, Temple Beth Shalom \nand the Islamic Society of Boston\nAt Faith Lutheran Church (corner of Broadway and Prospect)\nEvery 2nd and last Tuesday of the month from 5:00-8:00 \nFor the past few years, the shul's neighbor, Faith Lutheran Church has been running “Faith Kitchen”, a community meal program sponsored by the church and staffed by volunteers. Now, the shul along with the mosque have been invited to join in an interfaith effort of providing meals to the community. Faith Kitchen currently provides a free bi-monthly meal open to all who wish to join. Guests come for a variety of reasons: hunger, loneliness, a chance to get out of the house, an opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones, an opportunity to serve others. The guiding principle is quite simple: we are a community of individuals who come together to be with one another and to share our lives with one another in the preparation and enjoyment of a wholesome and inexpensive meal. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday February 13th, intrepid hikemeister Gedalia will be heading to Weston Ski Track for a day of cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Weston grooms 15 kilometers of trails for both skate and classical skiing across varying terrain along the banks of the scenic Charles River.\n\nThis is a great way to meet new people in our community and should be a lot of fun.\n\nHere is the Q and A:\n\n*WHERE DO WE LEAVE FROM AND WHEN?*\nWe'll leave from the Tremont Street Shul at 10:00 AM, we should be back around 5 PM. Weston Ski Track is a half hour away. TBS has services at 8:30 followed by breakfast, so we should be well timed if you’d like to participate in either.\n\n*WHAT SHOULD I BRING? *\nPlease dress appropriately for the weather, wear layers, if you’re snow shoeing wear water proof hiking boots because the snow shoes strap on top of your shoes, water, and lunch are also a good idea, and possibly snacks if you want to make friends :-) .\n\n*WHAT DOES IT COST?*\nThe trail pass for the day is $12, renting snow shoes/skis an additional $12. If you have your own gear you’ll still need to pay for the trail pass. If you're not planning on driving bring a couple of bucks to chip in on gas for the drivers.\n\n*HOW DO I SIGN UP?**\nSend an email to hikes@tremontstreetshul.org by Friday the 11th and let us know:\nA) Your name\nB) Your phone #\nC) Do you have a car and how many does it seat?\nD) skis or snow shoes.\n\nWe will limit the number of people based on the number of cars we have going, so first come first served.\n\n*WHAT HAPPENS IF IT IS TORENTIAL DOWN POUR OF ESCARGOT?*\nIf the weather looks really problematic, we will likely postpone the trip check e-mail the night before or call that morning.\n

DESCRIPTION:TBS is happy to host Minyan Tehillah for Friday night services. From their web site (www.minyantehillah.org): "Minyan Tehillah in Cambridge, Massachusetts strives to create a spiritually uplifting tefillah, grounded in our commitment to halakha and to maximizing the participation of both women and men.\nIn our monthly Saturday morning services women and men lead the Torah service and P'seukei Dzimra. Men lead Shacharit and Mussaf. In our monthly Friday night services, a woman leads Kabbalat Shabbat and a man leads Ma'ariv. There is a mechitza separating women and men, and we wait for 10 women and 10 men before starting shacharit or ma'ariv."

In the past year, Faith Kitchen expanded from one meal per month to two and fed roughly 1100 at a cost of about 78 cents per person. DESCRIPTION:PESACH ARCHAEOLOGY LECTURE\n
After a successful kickoff lecture in January (“The Mikvah Today: Reflections and Provocations” by Naomi Horowitz), the 2005 Jewish Culture Lecture Series continues with a special Pesach offering. TBS member Joseph Weinstein will speak on the topic of “Exodus in History: New Light from the Nile Delta.” \n
Judaism is an historical religion, relying upon events from the past as its primary evidence for the existence of the divine and the ability of the divine to intervene in the physical world. Yet until recently, there was astoundingly little extra-Biblical evidence that the most central events -- the sojourn in Egypt, the Plagues, the Exodus, revelation at Sinai, and the Conquest of Canaan -- ever occurred at all. As Dr. Weinstein will tell us, recent archaeological discoveries in the Nile Delta are beginning to change all that. \n
Key places mentioned in the Biblical account, including the cities of Pithom, Rameses, Sukkot, Shur, and geographical markers like Pi-Hahirot and the "Reed Sea", have only recently been identified and subjected to the excavator's spade. Much of this new evidence is still unpublished, and unknown outside a narrow group of specialists; Biblical historians are only beginning to digest this new information, and explore its implications. As it has turned out, we knew much less than we thought we knew, and most of what we thought we knew, has turned out to have been wrong.\n
What we now do know is that a large, intrusive West Semitic (Israelite?) population occupied the Nile Delta during the Second Intermediate Period (c. 1800-1500 BCE), and its culture continued to influence the Delta long afterwards. We also now have evidence for major refugee movements (the Exodus?) at the end of this period, coinciding with reports of dramatic climatic disturbances (the Plagues?) and with a wave of destructions of Canaanite city-states (the Conquest?). We also now know where most of the places mentioned in the Exodus account, including the Reed Sea, were located. Yet this new evidence raises even more questions than it solves: how did an account of these events c. 1500 BCE become the foundation account of Iron Age Israel, when Israel did not appear on the historical record until at least 300 years later? How and why did an account of these events take the form which it assumes in the Bible? And for us today, what does this new evidence tell us about who we are, where we came from, what we believe, and how we came to be "Israel?"\n
Dr. Weinstein is an interdisciplinary thinker and researcher with a strong interest in Biblical and Ancient Near Eastern History who has presented numerous academic papers dealing with the historical background of the Exodus accounts to the Egyptology Section of the Society for Biblical Literature, the section on Israel and Canaan of the American Schools for Oriental Research, and the Bible section of the Association for Jewish Studies. \n
The talk will be held at TBS on April 10th at 7:30 p.m. For more information please contact David Pincus; 617.492.1814, coffee@tremonstreetshul.org.\n

DESCRIPTION:Temple Beth Shalom will again host the City of Cambridge's annual Holocaust Commemoration Program. Free and open to the public.\n\nThe City of Cambridge Holocaust Commemoration will be held Wednesday, May 11, at 7 p.m., at Temple Beth Shalom, 8 Tremont Street, Cambridge.\nThe program will include readings, candle lighting, remembrance and music by members of the Cambridge Community Chorus and A Besere Velt.\n\nKeynote personal remarks will be shared from Holocaust survivor Ilse Heyman. Born in the Rhineland, Ilse's family moved to Amsterdam in 1933 where she was well received by the Dutch. In 1943, she was sent to a slave labor camp in Holland and in 1944 with the imminent Allied invasion, her group was sent to Auschwitz and from there all over Germany. Near the end they were digging ditches near Hamburg and were exchanged for German prisoners of war and taken to Sweden by the Red Cross. After coming to the US and working briefly in a garment factory, she was hired at the Window Shop where she worked for 25 years.\n\nMore info at: http://www.cambridgema.gov/deptann.cfm?story_id=668

DESCRIPTION:
In the spirit of Yom Haazma’ut ( Israel Independence Day)\nwith Rabbi David Jaffe\nSaturday May 14, 1:30/2:00 PM ( after mincha )
\n\nWhen we live in Boston, why do we face Israel? What does Israel have to do with our spirituality, or with our prayers ?\n\n Israel is a central focus of Judaism. In this non-political session we will be studying and discussing the question of “Why Pray to the East”, and how this informs our relationship to Israel and one another; as individuals, as a community and as a people.\n
\n
\n\nTBS member Rabbi David Jaffe is a graduate of the Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Following his studies at Shappels and the Bat Ayin Yeshiva in Israel—where he focused on the intersection of traditional Jewish wisdom and modern approaches to moral development—he received his rabbinic ordination in Jerusalem. He is a faculty member in the Talmud department at the Gann Academy.\n\nIf you are interested in additional details please contact David Dolev at programs@tremontstreetshul.org or call 617-8646388. \n\n

In the past year, Faith Kitchen expanded from one meal per month to two and fed roughly 1100 at a cost of about 78 cents per person. Meals are served on the second and last Tuesday at each month. \nVolunteers of all ages are welcome to come to the church, on the corner of Prospect and Broadway, anytime between 5:00 and 8:00 to help prepare, cook, serve and join in the meal. Questions? Contact David Dolev (programs@tremontstreetshul.org) \n\n
